If Jango Fett went to kill Padme instead of the shapeshifter, the shapeshifter would’ve given him up and they would’ve known it was him. Not to mention the assassination attempt was supposed to be discreet. Right after anakin and obi wan left, Padme would’ve been heavily guarded by her guards because everyone would’ve been on high alert, making it impossible for Jango to finish the job cleanly. A common misconception is that palpatine was wanting Padme assassinated. Gunray wanted her assassinated as an exchange for joining the separatist.
